The Story Behind Cowboyland

The Story Behind Cowboyland

People often ask where Cowboyland came from, expecting the answer to begin with western fashion. But the truth is, Cowboyland started long before boots, fringe, or apparel.

As an animator, graphic designer, photographer, and videographer, I’ve spent years thinking about how people experience stories visually. I became fascinated with the idea that brands could become worlds. Few people understood that better than Walt Disney. What inspired me most wasn't just animation or theme parks. It was his ability to create entire universes people could emotionally step into.

Working within the western apparel industry introduced me to another world entirely. One rooted in culture, identity, style, and history. But I found myself constantly returning to one question: What happens when Black western stories are allowed to dream bigger?

Cowboyland became my answer.

Rather than treating the Black Western experience only as history to be remembered, I wanted to imagine it as a place where imagination could run free. A whimsical world where Blackness exists without limits. A place filled with mystery, wonder, joy, storytelling, and possibility. A world where cowboys, dreamers, artists, and trailblazers all belong.

Full disclosure - We use generative AI to create some of our images for Cowboyland. Did you know that if someone were to make Disneyland from scratch today would cost roughly 200 Million just to get it off the ground?  It costs hundreds of millions for each world at Disneyland.   Clearly we don't have that kind of cash laying around, but I do have a creative mind that is worth far more.

We do use real models and then generate the world around them.  Why? With rising costs and time restraints, generative AI allows us to transport you to a new world! As we continue to grow our team and brand, we hope less generative AI will be used.  As an artist, Art is an important part of my life and career.  AI is a tool that can be used to enhance if done correctly and with integrity. Exactly what we intend to do.

Cowboyland isn't simply a destination.

It's what happens when western culture and imagination ride together.

Dust off your boots. Cowboyland here we come!

Love,
Sarah
